Ren and Stimpy: Seasons Three and a Half-ish REMADE REVIEW posted Oct 31st 2010, 12:43AM
Mood: ArtisticMusic: Fade to Black Performed by Metallica

Publisher: Games Animation
Show: Ren and Stimpy
Price: $28.34 on Ebay
Length: 6:46:19

You know, I can ALMOST remember the little glimpse of light shining down upon the face of animation that was Ren and Stimpy. Today, people still crack up at the random violence and humor in Family Guy, find Bart's chalkboard writings interesting in The Simpsons, find American Dad worshipping commies while in hell to die for, but animation has steadily declined. Ren and Stimpy was and is forgotten, but John K's brilliance had helped Nick become the success that it is today. In fact, if it weren't for him, shows like South Park and Spongebob wouldn't be nearly as funny as people consider them to be. Sadly, Kricfalusi's brilliance lasted not even three years before Nick told him to hit the dust. And slowly, the show's downfall began.

In early 1993, after the final John K episode aired, "Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen", Games Animation began writing the disaster that soon followed that was known as the 'Ignoramous period' to most critics. Bob Camp turned from strict producer to a last-minute writing insanity.
Without John K's direction or inspiration, the series finally shot itself in the head in 1996 after crawling along for three last seasons.

However, despite all of the horrendous poison that Games gave, The Ren and Stimpy Show's third season was their final stand, and they almost had something good going on. Here's a look at the beginning of the end:

Video Central

DISC 1:

To Salve or Salve Not / No Pants Today
A Yard Too Far / Circus Midgets
Ren's Pecs / An Abe Divided
Stimpy's Cartoon Show
Jiminy Lummox / Bassmasters

DISC 2:

Ren's Retirement
Jerry The Bellybutton Elf / Road Apples
Hard Times For Haggis
Eat My Cookies / Ren's Bitter Half
Lair Of The Lummox
Hermit Ren

DISC 3:

House Of Next Tuesday / A Friend In Your Face!
Blazing Entrails / Lumberjerks
Prehistoric Stimpy / Farm Hands
A Hard Days' Luck / Magical Golden Singing Cheeses
I Love Chicken / Powdered Toast Man vs. Waffle Woman
It's A Dog's Life / Egg Yolkeo

What I'm about to say next could possibly one of the worst mistakes
made: The members that quit Spumco have moved on to Games' run. There. I said it. Games had already began to slowly ruin the show. The second season especially included several cuts on TV (in particular Big Baby Scam and Sven Hoek) and as die-hard fans began to watch these, they
slowly began to realize something was wrong.

The storyboards and art direction are not even near Spumco's talent for direction, probably one of the reason John K was tardy for his episodes. Bob Camp seems to not care about hard work like the Spumco employees (more like servants) did, and he covered this up by saying,
"we just want to stay on schedule." Well, sentence me to damnation.

The extras are about as bland as Mario with no jump. There's no "making
of" scenes, no pencil tests, just a bunch of commentaries. Out of the ten episodes from Season 3 and seven episodes from Season 4, there's about twelve commentaries from Games members and John K himself. Most of these sound rushed and it puts in various random clips that don't even follow the constant babbling. However, the lack of direction and extras doesn't totally diminsh this section, but I'll talk about that later.

A hungover hobo could make more complex stories on toilet paper. And speaking of toilet paper, the toilet humor has gotten out of control, and unfortunately, it's not even funny. As the seventeen episodes progress, it gets more basic, which means more worse. (Ren and Stimpy move into a futuristic house; the duo are adopted by Mr and Mrs. Pipe; Ren becomes buff, etc.) There's a few Spumco-written episodes left in the set (Lair of the Lummox is a sequel to Untamed World, A Yard Too Far was intended for the second season), but overall, it's clear that John K should be the man with the pencil.

Just add one ingredient: Dog Saliva, and enjoy! MMMMM-HMMMM!

And don't get me started on the voice acting. Alan Young (Ren's Retirement, Lair of the Lummox, Blazing Entrails) and his friend Jack Carter (Stimpy's Cartoon Show, Bassmasters, It's A Dog's Life) are new to the cast, and are so far the best-sounding. What's sad is that they didn't have more major roles. Billy West now does both Ren and Stimpy, but it's more entertaining to hear a girl go through puberty. His Stimpy voice seems less energetic, lacking the "Oh Joy" from the first and second seasons, but his Ren voice reaches new lows. It's very calm,
disturbingly unsatisfying, and not as psychotic. It's more entertaining
to listen to a five-year-old girl on sugar scream.

However, despite all of the terrible disadvantages and defeaning voice acting, there are times when this DVD contains some of the funniest things heard on Television. The earlier episodes are agruably the better ones. Episodes that seem less rushed, such as Stimpy's Cartoon Show, Lair of The Lummox, and A Yard Too Far,
which seem a lot better than episodes like Farm Hands, Egg Yolkeo, and No Pants Today, which is terribly acted and produced.

Hermit Ren is a hit-or-miss attempt to match Spumco's writing, and for a good deal of the episode, it nearly gets it. Billy West is still ear-piercingly bad and the obvious gags to living in a cave (Eating off of spore / plants, bats, going psychotic) get kind of old.
The best episode out of them all is Ren's Bitter Half. It is the ultimate Spumco revival, and the sociopathic jokes from the first season are still here. It's no "Stimpy's Fan Club" or "Black Hole", but it is very much John K. But, overall, it's a mixed, half-assed attempt at reviving the series, and that's decent praise.

This actually happened in the DVD once, a very brief mess-up.

The Decision

Ren and Stimpy went from pure gold, enough to surpass The Jetsons and
Looney Tunes, to a pathetic beggar on the street, living in a box that says, "Will Work For Scripts". Episodes like "Stimpy's Cartoon Show",
"Hermit Ren", "Ren's Bitter Half", and "Lair of the Lummox" will be enough to keep fans entertained, and it's a worthwhile experience for die-hard fans, but it's a close call overall. Recommended.

Hey, welcome to Sheezyart and thanks for the comments and watch, I can only give you 3 pieces of advice really, accept and encourage critiques of your works and objections to your reviews, (and those that are plainly designed to aggravate you, just don't respond to), never rise to the bait of trolls, as well as don't add random people to your friends list without them actually being a friend of yours on here. Trust me, people notice this and don't approve. Altough you can keep me on there for now.

Welcome to sheezyart, mind you don't step on the crybabies.
